AP Students 2008 - 2009 Summer Study Blog

Hola a todos! This is meant to be an informational summer website for the students of AP Spanish Language for the 2008/2009 school year. It is intended for parents to use for updates and information about the Spanish Language Tour and for my students if there are any questions during the summer about the work previously issued in May.

Notes Spn II - Direct Object Pronouns

Direct Object Pronouns:

When to use them?: Cuando quieres substituir el nombre de un objeto con un pronombre.

How to determine?: The Direct Object Pronoun is determined by asking yourself: What / who is the object being "verbed" in the sentence.

Example: Compraste las cerezas? --- What is being verbed? (the cerezas)

Step 2: Determine if the DO is masculine / feminine or singular / plural. (cerezas is plural feminine)

--- So then, pl / fem/ 3rd person --- We will substitute it with "LAS".
(Don't remember where that came from? check the chart)


Step 3: The rules

The rules are: the DOP must go BEFORE the conjugated MAIN verb - or AFTER an "-ing" (gerund - ando/iendo / yendo) or AFTER an INFINITIVE!

- Compraste will be a conjugated verb, so your DOP will go in front of what you want to say...
- Conjugate it correctly....
- Create answer!
- Si, las compré!

Notes Spn II

What will the test be about? --

Present progressive: (presente progresivo)

Formula: ESTAR + Verb/ing

The present progressive indicates an action that is currently in progress. (It is "ing-ing")
El presente progresivo indica una accion que esta en progreso. (Esta "ando-ing" or iendo-ing)

You always have to use ESTAR and conjugate it in these types of sentences.

Remember: 1x + 2y = ? ; 2 = hablar -----> Yo estoy hablando.

(The colors represent how the numbers and words are releated).

The PAST progressive: (El pasado progresivo)

Formula: ESTAR (imperfect) + Verb / ing

The past progressive indicates an action that was in progress in the past.
El pasado progresivo indica una accion que estaba en progreso en el pasado.

*The only difference from the present progressive is that your ESTAR must be conjugated to it's imperfect tense.

Estar is an - AR verb correct? - Therefore, it's endings must always be:
- aba, abas, aba, abamos, abais, or aban

I was watching tv = Estaba mirando la television.

Remember: 1xi + 2y = ? ; 2 = hablar ---> Yo estaba hablando

Preterite vs imperfect:

Confusing but very easy....

Remember that to determine if something needs the preterite there are only 2 reasons:
1. Accion Termindas (finished actions - which are actions that are only done 1x and not repeated in that instant)

2. El comienzo de una accion. (The start of an action such as starting to rain, or started to play baseball)

---- If you can't place your reason for choosing preterite into one of those categories then, it will probably need to be in the imperfect.

The imperfect is much more difficult to understand because it doesn't exist with such differences in English. The idea is to try to reason it out by looking for key words in the sentences.

Key words that tell for sure you need imperfect:
Siempre: always --- acciones habituales
cada dia: every day --- acciones habituales
mientras: - acciones en progreso (which can include actions that imply - "ing")

Other clues are the reasons:
Remember your reasons for using the imperfect:

*For descriptions and characteristics
*For age
*For non specific times
*For a speculation about time (such as "it was 8pm" - "eran las 8")
*For actions in progress
*For habitual actions
*For weather

Cuando: is very special because it indicates interuppted actions

Someone was "ing-ing" when you "preterite" tense(d) them/it.

I was watching tv when you turned it off.
We were cooking dinner when you arrived.
She was studying when you flooded the toilet.

The usage in spanish is the same - you will need one verb in it's past progressive or imperfect
and the other verb will be in the preterite.

* Estaba mirando la tele cuando tu saltaste la cuerda.
*Estabamos cocinando el pollo cuando tu llegaste.
*Ella estaba estudiando cuando nosotros fuimos al cine.

I can even change them around...

*Tu saltaste la cuerda cuando ella estaba mirando la tele.
*Tu llegaste cuando estabamos cocinando el pollo.
*Nosotros fuimos al cine cuando ella estaba estudiando.


They are still linked with cuando and the other verb is in imperfect or past progressivo.

lunes: Escribir un ensayo (1pg) "A España o a la muerte"
  • Eres un inmigrante que quiere inmigrar a España
  • Tienes que inventar tus porques para irte alli basado de la vida estadounidense
  • No es una carta - es mas bien una entrada en tu "diario".
Martes: Escribir un ensayo (1pg) "Un millon para Syria"
  • Piensa que el pais de Syria va a recibir un millon de refugios de Irak.
  • Cómo afectará o impactará al país, su gobierno, su gente, la cultura y la vivienda al recibir tantos inmigrantes a la vez?
Miercoles: Escribir una carta (1pg) "A mi hijo con amor"
  • Piensa que eres un/una padre/madre y tu hijo se va a otro pais para mejorar las cosas para la familia.
  • En esta carta informal, debeis expresar tus miedos, tus preocupaciones, tus deseos, tus alegrias - todo eso - como si fueras escribiendo una carta a tu propio hijo.
Jueves: Escribir un ensayo (1pg) "Como puede afectar una bajada de la economia en cuanto a la inmigracion
  • Teniendo en cuenta que el dolar esta bajando su valor y que latino america esta sufriendo debido a la subida de precios de los combustibles, los alimentos, y el transporte, debes explicar tus pensamientos sobre como todo eso afectara a los paises latino americanos en respeto a la inmigracion.
  • Que puede pasar? como afectaria al gobierno, la gente, la educacion, etc...
